Sambo martial arts is a Russian style of self-defense designed by the Soviet Union in the 1900s. The word SAMBO is derived from the word ‘Samozaschchita Bez Oruzhiya’ which means self-defense without weapons. Notably, Sambo borrows heavily from other already established Asian defense styles because they were introduced way before Sambo. In the year 1991, the International Olympic Committee declared Sambo an Olympic sport. Some of the most commonly used styles used in Sambo martial arts today include self-defense Sambo, special Sambo, sport Sambo, combat Sambo and freestyle Sambo.
Self-defense Sambo teaches different defensive tactics aimed at stopping all forms of attacks such as weapon attacks, fist attacks and so on. It resembles Jujitsu and forms part of the most common defense styles in martial arts. In schools, children instructors teach children how to protect themselves from aggressive opponents such as rapists and kidnappers for the sake of their personal security and safety. To boost self confidence, people are encouraged take training lessons in self-defense Sambo, especially for groups living in unsafe neighborhoods.
Army Special Forces and law enforcement agencies are some of the groups that train in special Sambo. Special Sambo involves specialization of Sambo techniques made specifically for particular law enforcement units. Different units select different areas of specialization depending on what role they play in their line of duty meaning that an Air Force unit may have a different package of special Sambo from a unit in the Navy and so on.
In sport Sambo, the learner trains with the main goal of participating in a sporting event. Sport Sambo looks more like Judo because the competitors play to win. In fact, takedowns and leg locks frequently feature in the sport. Mostly, competitions in sport Sambo are held in schools and championships. The sport can be played by people of all age groups.
Combat Sambo involves the use of weapons and skills for disarming the opponent, specifically meant for the military. Practitioners of combat Sambo train in methods like striking and grappling, uncommon practices in other styles of Sambo. Schools do not train students in combat Sambo in order to avoid injuries and harm in the course of training.
Freestyle Sambo differs from other styles of Sambo in that the practitioners practice use of choke holds among other prohibited tactics in Sambo. Actually, the objective of freestyle Sambo aims at encouraging practitioners of other styles like Jujitsu and Judo to participate in Sambo tournaments. Freestyle Sambo came into effect in the year 2004 through endorsement by the American Sambo Association in the United States of America.
Training in various martial arts techniques like Sambo should be encouraged in schools. Most importantly, members of the public should also consider enrolling in Sambo lessons. The responsibility of personal safety and security falls primarily on each individual. Martial arts Sambo equips the learner with the ability to take care of his or her own safety in the streets and at home.
